Art History

Wow, I learned a lot about art history today! What I found extremely interesting was the part on World War One. As a history major, I noticed how many artists at the beginning of the war portrayed the war as romantic. However, this did not last! The artist began to show the devastating effects in their work. To me, this demonstrated how the war impacted them and their work. I also enjoyed taking the time to do a self-portrait with different techniques. What a great day!

The movements prior to and during WW2 are also really interesting. You might want to look up the movements "der blau reiter" and "die brucke" and Kathe Kollwitz as well. Kathe Koolwitz's work is powerful and beautiful in the way it portrays women and children in war.

Goya's Disaster's of War series from the Napoleonic wars (I think) are also really interesting.

I found this theme of disillusionment fascinating as well. Have you ever read any WW I poets, like Wilfred Owen? Or memoirs, like Sassoon (I forget his first name but he wrote a powerful memoir)? I also loved Virginia Woolf's novel, "Mrs. Dalloway" for its interpretation of the effects of World War I London society. They also provide a glimpse into the loss of romanticism and faith that many soldiers went through.

I was so impressed with this lesson because she was able to do so much with us in such a short amount of time. To offer insights into paintings like that amazing and her art activity flowed beautifully from the lecture. What I really like was how we were all able to create a piece of art quickly and share our ideas on each piece.
